Design

We See It Too.

With thousands of projects completed across the US and Canada, there is a good chance our design work has impacted part of your vision. Whether for single-site renovations or multi-site roll-outs, ZWA excels at adapting brand designs to unique locations at scale and velocity.

And that’s the way we think of it. We make places for people that will have an impact on their lives. We know how to connect with people through design.

Of course, none of this means anything if it can’t be made into reality. We work all over the country in multiple jurisdictions. We know how to manage large teams of consultants, work with realistic budgets and schedules, and coordinate with Landlords and general contractors to get projects built successfully.

A 33,000 square foot health club located over 2 floors at the new Lincoln Common development at the old site of Children’s Memorial Hospital in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. As architects we were paired with New York based Meyer Davis as the interior designer.

The Christian Dior Couture store is a 1000 square foot space located inside the renovated Nordstrom at the Mall of America. As the architect we collaborated with the French interior designer, Italian lighting designers and Nordstrom to create a sleek, elegant store.

The white textured finishes with brass accents creates a jewel box for the couture clothing and leather goods. The simple, yet intricate details and high precision of the millwork allow for the brand’s goods to be proudly displayed.

Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile

This project entailed the renovation of 7 floors of meeting space for one of the largest Loop area convention hotels in Chicago. Unique solutions were created for the four story atrium space to bring our concept to life with a custom hanging Green Wall.

ZWA worked to integrate many concepts from Marriott’s new “Next Gen Meeting Space” guidelines, becoming one of the first properties to embrace this new concept of meeting, including an Event Hub space.

The infusion of natural elements imbued the spirit of the “City in a Garden” and provided an organic counterpoint to more industrial urban elements.

Starbucks

Starbucks Mandalay Bay - Las Vegas, Nevada

As a Starbucks AOR we work across the U.S. and Canada with their in-house design teams to design both new stores and renovate existing locations.

We understand QSR/FSR, hotel operations and economics, which allows us to use that knowledge to affect the overall design in a positive way. .

Starbucks Grand Sierra - Reno, Nevada

We have been an integral team member as Starbucks has re-focused their design program on providing customized, contextual, community based design experiences for each location throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Starbucks Caesars Palace - Las Vegas, Nevada

In addition to our work for brands such as, Equinox and DIOR, we are currently architects for Caesars Entertainment.

Starbucks Resorts World - Las Vegas, Nevada

Starbucks University + Bulldog - Provo, Utah

Brigham Young University the design needed to be welcoming to both the students and the local community. An unusual utility easement that crossed the site forced the placement of the store close to neighboring buildings and limited the amount of parking.

A wood trellis defines a patio space that is partially protected from the elements, and, combined with the local climate, allows for nearly year round outdoor seating.

Our design uses a tall shed roof to bring ample natural light into the café. The interior takes cues from the exterior and uses natural materials to relate to the exterior of the building and connect with the surrounding mountain environment.

Federales

Developed by the Sterling Bay/Four Corners Group, Federales is a 12,000 square foot tequila and tacos restaurant. As part of a national rollout program, this custom project is designed to integrate into a variety of neighborhoods.

The design of the new open-air restaurant and bar incorporates an existing auto repair shop within its kitchen and a turn of the century house contains the taco take-out window.

The main dining room has a retractable roof over the bar and garage doors opening to the patio tying the interior and exterior together. While the patio is defined by a metal structure with a retractable roof system, allowing customers to engage with the street activity.

031119 - 444 Peterboro - Exterior Rendering small.jpg

444 Peterboro is a new 3-story mixed-use building located in the Midtown neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. It is constructed of 28 refurbished shipping containers creating a matrix of retail and office spaces based off the 40’ x 8’ x 9.5’ shipping container size.

Bright paint and local graffiti muralists revived the shipping containers to highlight the corrugated steel and differentiate it from the existing container building.

Tenant spaces can expand as needed depending on their space requirements. The building links to the existing Detroit Shipping Company Food Hall, and event also built out of existing shipping containers and opened in 2018.

Large punched openings offer well lit office space and allow the first floor retail vendors visibility along the streetfront.

Hotel Dörr

Hotel Dörr is a 40 room boutique hotel and retail space located in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. Upon opening in summer of 2019 it is the first new hotel built in Door County in 20 years.

With a view of the bay, the hotel design is meant to evoke a Scandinavian, modern coastal lodge dubbed “Wis-coastal” by the design team.

 Palm Beach Gardens

The renovation of this Palm Beach Gardens Florida hotel is a dramatic transformation of a property barely touched in decades. An under-utilized restaurant was converted into a new M-Club concierge lounge with an adjacent unused courtyard being connected with a new door to provide an indoor/outdoor experience for elite guests.

The entire lobby was reprogrammed to create a new unifying dramatic ceiling gesture and relocated bar from a dark corner to be a central, energizing element.

Other areas impacted by the renovation include a full renovation of the hotel’s ballroom and meeting spaces and a major expansion of pre-function space with the demolition of existing board rooms and new storefront glazing overlooking an enhanced and re-landscaped pool terrace.

813 W Randolph

ZWA_813_1.jpg

ZWA’s office is located in one of Chicago’s most sought out neighborhoods in the midst of restaurant row, also known as Randolph Street. The interior of the space was designed to celebrate the building’s existing features while complementing them with contemporary touches.

Exposed timber, ductwork, and brick pay homage to its bones whereas pops of blue and red represent ZWA throughout.

The exposed architectural elements are a reflection of ZWA’s design commitment to the environment and targeted silver certification with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The roof-top deck design takes the building to another level, creating a cozy and inviting indoor/outdoor lounge above the hustle and bustle of Randolph Street with a breathtaking view of the city.
