J. Douglas Zimmerman

Doug has dedicated his 25+ year career to helping corporate, hospitality and institutional industry leaders with the strategic thinking, design, procurement, construction and operational management of innovative facilities and real estate portfolios. What does all this mean? Doug is a master collaborator with boundless energy. He has a deep passion for thinking “out of the box” and doing what he does. As an effective manager of people and programs, he has consulted extensively with Fortune 500 and other multi-national corporations, as well as with major public and private institutions. He is actively involved in all aspects of ZWA, using his unique aptitude for motivating people and managing projects to make it a dynamic learning and growth-oriented company, and frankly a fun place to be around.

His recent ZWA work includes programs for Barcelo Crestline Corporation, Marriott International Inc., Gap Inc., and the US General Services Administration. While Doug focuses on both new and renovation construction, he is highly experienced at large scale program management assignments, strategic facilities consulting, and the design of complex facilities solutions. He is an advocate for process innovation and global product/vendor sourcing.

Doug’s broad professional background laid the groundwork to co-found this successful company. Doug began his career with high-end hospitality design and construction projects for the Royal Family in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Prior to founding ZWA, he was a Managing Director for Knight Architects Engineers Planners, Inc. where he served as COO for the Commercial, Industrial and Institutional Facilities Division. Doug also served as Architecture Business Segment Principal for the Chicago office of Sverdrup Facilities, Inc., as well as Director of Corporate Real Estate and Facilities Management and Director of Design and Technical Services for Herman Miller, Inc. Prior to these associations he began his career working for 3D/International, Westinghouse Corporation, and SOM/Chicago. He lists the IDRC, NACORE, DBIA and IFMA as professional affiliations he has been involved with during his diverse career. He has garnered numerous awards and his work has been published in many professional periodicals. Doug has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Environmental Design from The Layton School of Art and Design. He completed his graduate studies in Environmental Design and Psychology at Cornell University, and has continued his post-graduate education with courses at the Business School and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.

Lee S. Weintraub, AIA, NCARB

Lee, who co-founded ZWA, is also the principal project management and design architect of the firm. Lee has nearly 25 years of professional experience, successfully implementing building designs from concept through project close-out for over $300 million worth of new and renovation construction.

At ZWA you’ll find his fingerprints on everything from the big picture to the tiniest of details. He is able to use his unique ability to establish a balance between design, schedule and budget in order to exceed client expectations. He is an expert at developing the process side, in other words, creating the steps for getting from “here to there”. He uses his knowledge and skills to create an understandable road map for communications and the technical processes needed for a project. He has an intense desire to problem solve in a holistic way.

As a leader in fostering the educational growth and process improvement strategies for the firm, his non-traditional architectural resume puts him in the perfect spot to challenge the status quo and to take the company and our clients in new and interesting directions. This is demonstrated by his leadership in: numerous Residence Inn and Courtyard by Marriott renovation projects for Barcelo Crestline Corp.; a variety of customized public space and guestroom renovation projects for Host Hotels/Resorts; renovation of the North Michigan Avenue Westin Hotel in downtown Chicago and the historic Alexis Hotel in Seattle; renovation of other Starwood hotels, including Westin and Sheraton brands and several IHC brand Crowne Plaza Hotels, an award winning Holiday Inn redevelopment project;  design and construction of a new ballroom building and renovation of all guestrooms at the Miramonte Resort and Spa in Indian Wells, CA for Destination Hotels & Resorts. Prior to founding ZWA, Lee served as a Principal for Knights Architects Engineers Planners, Inc. and was Senior Project Manager at Jack Train Associates, Inc. Lee is a licensed Architect in many states and is National Council of Architectural Registration Board certified. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, Chicago Architecture Foundation, and is a trustee of the American Jewish Committee. Lee earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Dan Hennessy, Business Development Officer

Dan Hennessy is a member of the ZWA senior leadership team and serves as the firms Business Development Officer. Responsibilities include the development, implementation and execution of plans and strategies to improve ZWA’s market position and achieve financial growth.

Dan is pragmatic leader with a flair for bold strategies and creative thinking. As a passionate hospitality executive who is focused on creating lasting relationships and sustained success, Dan is committed to understanding your enterprise “pain points” and business aspirations so that the right service solution can be implemented to achieve your desired outcome. With over 25 years of experience spanning all segments of the hospitality and senior living industries, Dan’s business development approach goes far beyond traditional norms and takes a holistic approach from a client perspective.

Notable engagements include business development assignments with Benjamin West, American Hotel Register and Marriott International where Dan was presented with Marriott’s “Presidents Circle” award for his efforts in developing long term strategic relationships with Marriott International’s Strategic Account group including IBM, Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson and the Ford Motor Company. Additional assignments that have contributed to achieving client objectives across multiple disciplines are roles in hotel management, revenue management, asset protection, property renovation, FF&E purchasing and hospitality technologies.

Dan serves as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, the Children’s Miracle Network and Falcons Youth Hockey Association.

John D. Brasile, Associate Principal, Director of Project Management

John brings more than 15 years of experience to ZWA , where he is responsible for the implementation of strategic facility solutions from the planning phase through construction, With a depth of knowledge that includes the development of comprehensive facility strategies, program/project management, due diligence, and on-site construction coordination, John meets our clients’ needs with a wealth of expertise and skill. John also provides services associated with due diligence for real estate transactions, multi-property asset assessments and peer review of construction documents.

During his 11 years with ZWA, John has personally been responsible for more than 150 hotel renovation projects throughout the United States. Recent work includes a highly publicized $10 million renovation project at the Alexis Hotel in Seattle as well as numerous program and project management responsibilities for RLJ Lodging Trust, BRESelect, Barcelo Crestline Corporation, Woodmont Hospitality, Graham Hospitality Systems, Meristar Hospitality Group, and LaSalle Hotel Properties. In addition to the understanding and skill that John applies to all of the projects under his direction, he provides leadership and development for ZWA initiatives. Additionally, John develops new client initiatives, implements program/project management process improvements, and institutes protocols for project account reporting.

Prior to ZWA, John worked with several highly respected architecture and interior design firms including Kennedy Associates, St. Louis, MO; Loebl Schlossman & Hackl, Chicago, IL; and Chipman-Adams, Park Ridge, IL.

Pamela L. Howell, Senior Architect, Director of Operations

Pam brings 12 years of architectural design expertise to ZWA, where she is responsible for leading the Retail Design Sector. With a depth of knowledge that includes retail, healthcare, adaptive reuse, and multifamily construction, Pam has worked in numerous sectors and on design projects of various scales.

At ZWA, Pam serves as the Starbucks relationship manager and has led the design team in an average of 20 renovation projects per month. She is responsible for the overall implementation of the site surveys, design, and construction documentation. With her skills in team organization and strategic programming, she has expanded the Starbucks store renovations from the Midwest and Mid-America region into Canada and the Western America Region.

Prior to ZWA, Pam worked with several prominent architecture firms including Harley Ellis Devereaux, Chicago, IL; OWP/P, Chicago, IL; and Martinez and Johnson Architecture, Washington, DC. At these firms she served as lead Project Architect for a variety of projects such as Au Bon Pain retail stores at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and University of Chicago Medicine Valley West Medical Office Building, University Hospital Center for Emergency Medicine in Sandwich, IL, Acadia on the Green apartment complex in Cleveland, OH, restoration and expansion of Paramount Theatre, Charlottesville, VA, and adaptive reuse of the United Mine Workers headquarters, Washington, D.C.
